“I’ve been able to really get to know Oaxaca in a different light than I would have without having worked with them. Since SiKanda is making such a great impact on the community, I think I am able to do the exact same thing.”

Hi!

Meet Ben, our volunteer from Louisville, Kentucky, a student at Miami University in Ohio. Ben came to Oaxaca to study abroad, and a few weeks into his stay, he decided to get involved in SiKanda’s volunteering program.

Most of his time at SiKanda, he spent supporting the communications team’s diversity of activities, but part of his service also meant putting into practice some of his knowledge as a university student in a relevant project. Considering his background, the Youth Leadership project coordination invited Ben to give a talk to the participants about the use of substances among young people, with the aim to provide information they can use to prevent their use, abuse, and risky situations. As a young person himself, his assignment also aimed to ease rapport with the participants.

By the time his volunteering was coming to and end, Ben had a chance to also take part in the activities related to the sports court constrution at the Cuesta Telesecundary School, part of the Visible Youth program, which encompasses a diversity of subjects aiming at young people’s strengthening.

Although Ben’s time at SiKanda was short, our team was very appreciative of his commitment, involvement and disposition to support in all he cuold. At SiKanda, we are deeply grateful to each and every individual who generously comes to SiKanda to volunteer their time and talent to support our mission and to strengthen the participants of our projects, and further to go back to their places of origin with a broader understanding of the importance of non-profit work and of Oaxaca.

“As a volunteer with SiKanda, I’ve seen firsthand the support, and I encourage you, to donate cause any, any little bit will, will go a long way with these projects.”
